THE WORK BEHIND THE ISSUE

WHY OUTPOST BEGAN CLOSE TO HOME

00 / THE PROTOTYPE

The Prototype

Issue 000 was not an expedition. It took two weekends. That will not remain the scale of OUTPOST. Future issues will be produced across unfamiliar countries, over longer distances and with far less control over the conditions encountered along the way. Before increasing that scale, I needed somewhere to test the format.

Issue 000 became the training ground. Its three locations were close enough to document within a controlled period and return to if something failed. The production remained deliberately manageable while the working method took shape. Switzerland provided the right place to begin.

01 / Why Switzerland

Few countries compress such different environments into such short distances.

Within several hours, a green valley becomes a glacier, a reservoir or a pass road crossing bare rock above 2,000 metres. Cableways climb directly into high-alpine terrain. Tunnels pass beneath mountains. Hotels stand beside dams, glaciers and roads that remain closed for much of the year.

FIG. 001 / ALPINE STREETS IN SUMMER

02 / THREE LOCATIONS

The landscape may appear remote, but it is supported by an unusually dense network of infrastructure. Electricity, transport and hospitality continue into places where almost nothing happens without planning and engineering.

This relationship defined the subject of Issue 000. Luxury in the Alps is not limited to expensive interiors. It can be warmth, access or protection from the environment. Each experience depends on the systems operating behind it. Switzerland made those conditions visible without requiring great distances between them.

Three Locations

Titlis, Grimsel and Furka were selected because they approached the same subject from different positions. Titlis presented architecture as a controlled interior inside a hostile landscape. Grimsel revealed the infrastructure required to provide energy, shelter and hospitality. Furka shifted the focus towards movement, access and the cultural life of the road.

Together, they created a compact study of how the Alps are occupied and experienced. The locations were not intended to define the future geography of OUTPOST. They provided enough variation to establish its working method before that method was taken somewhere less familiar.

03 / BEYOND ISSUE 000

Beyond Issue 000

Future Field Notes will have a different role. As the journeys become longer and less predictable, more of the work will happen between the planned locations. Routes will change, access may fail and decisions will increasingly depend on conditions encountered in the field.

The Atacama Desert will be the first step beyond the controlled scale of Issue 000.

From that point, the Field Notes can become a more immediate travel record. They will document failed approaches, unexpected encounters and the practical decisions that determine what can eventually be photographed, filmed and written.

These experiences will provide context for the main stories by recording the difference between the journey that was planned and the one that actually happened.

With Issue 000 as its controlled starting point, OUTPOST can now move towards journeys where distance and uncertainty become part of the record.
